Kenya misses out as Africa names eight for Beach Volleyball World C'ships

NAIROBI, April 26 (Xinhua) -- Kenya has missed out on a ticket to the 2019 Beach Volleyball World Championships in Germany after the conclusion of the Africa qualification tournament.

African Volleyball Confederation (CAVB) president Amr Elwani said on Friday that Africa will be represented by Mozambique, Morocco, Rwanda and Sierra Leone in the men's beach volleyball while the women's will have Egypt, Mauritius, Nigeria and Rwanda.

"Nigeria is a force to reckon with in beach volleyball and have produced medals for the country, but we have good teams from Rwanda, Egypt and Mozambique. Sierra Leone too have made a good account of themselves and it shows the sport is growing in Africa," said Elwani on Friday.

Mozambique defeated Nigeria 2-0 in the first quarterfinal match of the 2019 Africa Beach Volleyball Cup senior in Abuja. Delcio Soares and Aldexino Ninuja defeated Goodluck Anyasodike and Godwin Shekaru 21-16, 21-15.

Coach Osvako Machava said "We have seen Nigeria playing Pool match so we were expecting to meet them in the finals. They are very good team. Our main objective was to secure a ticket for the World Cup."

Morocco beat Angola 21-10, 21-13 while Rwanda defiled all odds to beat South Africa 21-18, 21-17. Sierra Leone led by Coach Sorie Kamara came from a set down to beat Mauritius 15-21, 21-18, 15-13.

Meanwhile, Africa number one beach volleyball women team, Egypt sent a strong signal by beating Morocco 21-11, 21-15.

Rwanda team led by Charlotte Nzaiuzenga beat Botswana 21-9, 21-10 while Mozambique beat Mauritius 14-21, 21-14, 15-13 to secure a ticket for the World Cup in Germany.
