NAIROBI, March 28 (Xinhua) -- Kenya's representative to this year's Men's African Volleyball Clubs Championship on Thursday promised to improve on the second place they attained at the event eight years ago.

David Lungaho, coach of Kenya Prisons, who will represent the east African nation alongside their local rivals General Service Unit (GSU), said the team is well prepared to face other teams in the tournament.

"When you talk of improving from second position, it means you are talking about emerging as eventual winners, and that is what we are aiming for," said Lungaho during the handing over of the flag to the team by interior cabinet secretary Fred Matiang'i.

The squad will leave for Cairo on Saturday to join 23 other sides for the tournament, which runs from April 1 to 10 and features teams from 14 nations.

"I introduced scientific training to the team during the two months of hard training we went through. Though we did not play international friendlies, we played several matches against local teams," said Lungaho.

Kenya Prisons team captain Eric Oduor said the team will have two days of training before the event commences, during which they anticipate playing one friendly match to gauge their strength.

"Cairo is a familiar hunting ground for us where we have played several times in the past, therefore we are not going to meet anything new there," said Oduor.

The Confederation of African Volleyball (CAVB) chose Egypt over Kenya to host the continental event owing to the superior facilities available in the North African nation.
