LOS ANGELES, Feb. 23 (Xinhua) -- Several Oscar nominations are poised to make history at the 91st Academy Awards to be held Sunday at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.

"Black Panther" is the first superhero film nominated for Best Picture. Traditionally, superhero films have been considered for entertainment only, not quite fit for the Oscar genres. "Black Panther," a box office hit amassing more than 1.34 billion U.S. dollars, surprised Hollywood with a fresh new look.

Hannah Beachler becomes the first African-American ever nominated for Best Production Design for her work on "Black Panther."

"Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" is the nominee for Best Animated Feature, which marks a new era for the animated films.

Lady Gaga is the first person to be nominated for Best Actress as well as Best Song, according to ABC. She played the leading role in "A Star Is Born," a musical romantic drama film.

Alfonso Cuaron, the director of "Roma," and Pawel Pawlikowski, the director of "Cold War," were both nominated for Best Director and Best Foreign Language Film at the same time, the first in 42 years.

Spike Lee finally received his first Oscar nomination for Best Director for his film "BlacKkKlansman." If successful, he will become the first African-American to win this award.

"Minding the Gap," directed by Bing Liu, is the nominee for Best Documentary Feature, the first time for a Hulu production.

"Roma," which has 10 Oscar nominations, is distributed by Netflix. If it wins, it will be a game changer for Hollywood, for the film has been primarily streamed online.

Yalitza Aparicio is the first indigenous Mexican actress nominated for Best Actress for her role in "Roma." Marina de Tavira, also for her role in "Roma," is another Mexican actress nominated for Best Supporting Actress.

Gabriela Rodriguez, the producer of "Roma," is the fist Latino woman ever nominated for Best Picture.
