LONDON, Feb. 11 (Xinhua) -- Manchester United confirmed Monday that Ashley Young has signed a contract extension which will keep him at Old Trafford until the end of June 2020.

The 33-year-old, who joined the club from Aston Villa in 2011, will now stay for nine seasons in Manchester, where he has 17 goals in 227 appearances and won a Premier League, one Europa League, an FA Cup and a League Cup title.

During his time at Old Trafford, Young has developed from a winger to a more defensive role, as he did at left back for England for much of their successful World Cup campaign in Russia last summer.

He has been a key player for coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after the Norwegian replaced Jose Mourinho, and took the captain's armband while Antonio Valencia was out injured.

"Since I've come into the club, Ashley has been fantastic. His attitude and his experience around the place is vital for us because we have got a young team," Solskjaer said.

"We've got players that need some leaders in the dressing room and Ash is one of them so I'm delighted," the coach told Manchester United's TV station.

Young is the fourth player to sign a new deal since Solskjaer joined on a caretaker basis, following Scott McTominay, Phil Jones and Anthony Martial.

The club will now work to assure the future of Spanish midfielders Juan Mata and Ander Herrera, who are both out of contract this summer.
