RIO DE JANEIRO, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- Brazil and Inter Milan striker Gabriel Barbosa said Friday that he will not take his starting position for granted as he begins a year-long loan with Flamengo.

Barbosa faced the media for the first time since joining the Rio de Janeiro club in a deal that will reportedly see him earn a monthly salary of 1.25 million reais (337,000 U.S. dollars).

The 22-year-old, who is also known as Gabigol, agreed to extend his Inter contract by 12 months to June 2022 for the deal to go ahead.

"I hope to not only score goals, but to also win trophies," Barbosa said. "I'm here to add something to the team. There are great players in my position and the coach will have a lot of options, but competition is always a good thing."

Other central strikers in Flamengo's squad include former Palmeiras and Fluminense player Henrique Dourado, Colombia international Fernando Uribe and Brazil U-20 star Lincoln Correa.

Barbosa, who has scored two goals in four matches for Brazil's national team, netted just once in nine appearances for Inter Milan following his 30 million euro move from Santos in 2016.

After a disappointing six-month spell with Benfica, he rejoined Santos on loan last January. The 2016 Olympic gold medallist was the leading scorer in Brazil's Serie A last year with 18 goals from 35 matches. Enditem
