MADRID, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- Deportivo Alaves will spend Saturday night as leaders of the Liga Santander after Manu Garcia's 95th minute header gave them a 1-0 win at home to Real Madrid.

Alaves had not beaten Real Madrid in the Mendizorroza Stadium in the league since 1931, but the close range header from their captain deep into injury time ended a run which has lasted 87 years.

Real Madrid have now failed to score in their last four matches and have gone played over 6 hours since scoring their last goal, meaning coach Julen Lopetegui must be worried about his future after they failed to create many clear chances to win on Saturday.

Lopetegui opted to play a four-man midfield with Dani Ceballos on the left and Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema in attack, while Mariano Diaz awaited his chance on the bench.

Another disappointing display from Benzema saw Mariano replace him at halftime of a game which Madrid had controlled but with little threat.

Lopetegui suffered another injury setback when Bale was forced out of the game with 10 minutes remaining and the home side claimed a historic win after Courtois got a hand on Ruben Sobrino's header, but could only divert the ball into Manu's path for him to score from just three yards out.

The win lifts Alaves from sixth place to the top of the table ahead of Sunday's matches for Barcelona, Sevilla, Atletico Madrid and Betis.

The day kicked off with Eibar winning an exciting topsy-turvy match 3-2 away to Girona.

The Basque side opened the scoring through a Charles penalty after just 12 minutes, only for two goals from Cristhian Stauni in the 40th and 42nd minute to turn the score around.

However, Anaitz Arbilla's header in the fifth minute of first half injury time levelled the scores and Sergi Enrich gave Eibar the win with another header with 18 minutes remaining.

Levante won their second game in a week when Enis Bardhi's 60th minute free kick giving them all three points away to Getafe.
