Thousands left without power as wild winds batter Australia's Tasmania state

SYDNEY, April 16 (Xinhua) -- Thousands of households in northern parts of Australia's island state of Tasmania have been left without power on Monday, due to severe weather.

Although TasNetworks has been working desperately to fix the grid, it remains unclear when power will be restored.

Around 3,000 homes were hit with major power outages overnight when howling winds reaching 70 km per hour, overturned a number of trees which toppled power lines.

"A low-pressure system passed through the south of the state along with a cold front this morning," a spokesperson for the Tasmanian Bureau of Meteorology told Xinhua.

"So we saw fairly strong and gusty winds flow across the state and hit the front, and we don't see winds easing today."

According to the spokesperson, the wild weather is not unusual for the state at this time of the year.

"It should end tomorrow with a high-pressure system coming and that will start to ease the winds off and we will start to see the showers ease as well by tomorrow night," he said.

"But we are expecting some snow in the south and west of the state later today."
