WASHINGTON, April 4 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday spoke over phone with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron on efforts to eradicate the extremist militant group Islamic State, said the White House.

The two leaders "discussed their commitment to ensure the total defeat of ISIS (IS)," said the White House in a statement.

As the fight against the militant group was coming to an end, Washington has been mulling about U.S. troops withdrawal from the war-torn country of Syria.

Meanwhile, the United States also vowed to eliminate the small IS presence in Syria, according to a statement released by the White House earlier in the day.

During their phone call, Trump and Macron also talked about the French president's upcoming state visit to Washington.

Macron's trip to Washington, which was scheduled between April 23-25, will be the first state visit under the Trump administration.

It has been reported that Trump was considering to bestow the rare honor of hosting Macron at a private dinner at Mount Vernon, the home of George Washington.

Trump and Macron met and phoned each other several times last year. The two struggled to soften their divergence over climate change and trade liberalization by seeking common ground on security and the fight against terrorism.
