PYONGYANG, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) -- Official media of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on Wednesday rejected accusations by U.S. officials that the DPRK is seeking to achieve a forcible reunification with South Korea with its own system by means of nuclear arms.

A commentary of the official daily Rodong Sinmun said such claims are "just last-ditch struggling of those much upset by the international opinion being built to the effect that the nuclear possession of the DPRK was attributable to the U.S. nuclear threat and hostile policy toward the DPRK."

The United States is also worried about "the dramatic phase of reconciliation being created between the north and the south of Korea entering this year," said the official daily of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea.

"The sordid aim sought by the U.S. is to brand the DPRK's nuclear weapons as the ones for 'achieving unification by imposing the communist system on the south' and then justify arms buildup in and around the Korean peninsula under the pretext of 'defending allies,'" it said.

It also accused Washington of trying to incite hostility toward the DPRK among South Koreans, driving a wedge between the north and the south and spoiling the atmosphere for the improvement of ties.

Top U.S. intelligence officials have suggested at Congressional hearings and other public appearances that the DPRK's ultimate goal is to achieve unification through nuclear weapons, according to media reports.

Adm. Harry Harris Jr., top commander of U.S. forces in the Pacific, have also said that the DPRK is pursuing more than just defending its social system through access to nuclear weapons and its purpose is to reunify the Korean Peninsula.
